The long 160 mile Gravel Grinder went off last weekend. Last year there was also a 50 mile option that disappeared officially. We are making the 50 mile option a club ride on Sunday, ... moreApril 19. My goal is to do this as an introduction to what the heck is this Gravel Grinding phenomenon all about anyways. And in such a way that doesn't require an extended visit to Sufferlandia. My understanding is that the whole point of the Gravel Grinders is to get out there out of the traffic and do your own thing, and my thing will be to take it easy. Adult beverages might be involved either before during or after. Probably not before unless you come from a hardened hash house harrier team.

If though you have the need for speed and want to make a side trip into Sufferlandia, or you just need to finish early to go get a root canal, take off fast and have at it.

Nord is helping out on this ride, he knows all the roads up there around Monument and Greenland and he has mucho lotta gravel grinding experience so I'm also hoping he will educate us newbies on what this thing is all about.

I set the time so we could be finishing up around about lunchtime or thereabouts.

It's the Monday Social Ride for the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI). The TSBVI has some tandem bikes for us to use. We are meeting at the school and taking ... morethe kids on a social ride. It's an incredible experience to say the least. This is a chance to make a kiddo's week just by riding your bike (something you would more than likely be doing anyway). One of our volunteers made this short about the ride a while back.

http://tinyurl.com/3vvwtdx

VOLUNTEER FORM AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE:http://tinyurl.com/4y8ge9n

You only need to fill this out if you want to captain a tandem. If not, just show up, ride and hang out with the kiddos. But I highly recommend filling out the form. You'll want to ride with a kid.

Email it to: volunteer@tsbvi.edu

This year we are going to have even more kids on the ride so it is very important that we get a bunch of people to sign up as volunteers. Last year's students spread the word and now all of the kids want to ride with us! So bad ass.

***It is VERY IMPORTANT that we get everyone to fill out the school's volunteer forms and email them back to the school NO LATER THAN first thing Monday Morning so that you can captain a bike. If you already filled one out last semester, you are good to go. If you can't go this week, fill out a form anyway so that when you can go, you are already signed up. Let's make sure every student that wants can ride with us. If you don't fill out the form, you can ride with us but can't have a chance to captain a tandem with a kiddo on the back.

WHEN AND WHERE: Mondays while school is in session. 6PM to unload tandems, we leave at 6:30 SHARP from the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. We meet here: http://g.co/maps/w8ffp. Be there on time. These kids are on a schedule, so the later you are, the less they get to ride.

WHAT: A leisurely ride through a nice neighborhood with the kids from the school. You will have as much fun as they do. After we drop the kids back at the school, we will ride for a while and maybe grab a beer or two. This time around we will try and find a place to end up that is closer to the school. More details to come.

WHAT YOU NEED: Lights, Locks, Wheels, an ID, and maybe some beer money for afterwards. If you are captaining a tandem that week, you will need to lock your bike at the school during the ride so don't forget that lock.

HOW: Social Cycling Austin rides AS traffic and NOT AGAINST it. We stop at red lights, yield the right of way and let cars pass as best we can. We don't block intersections. We are nice to both our fellow riders and the other traffic on the road.

Fill out that form and come join us Monday Evenings. It's a ton of fun and in the end, you are making these kids' day just by riding your bike.

Spread the word! The more the merrier. See you on Monday at the School!

This is the scenic rural ride from northeast Travis County into southeast Williamson County and then through northwest Bastrop County. We'll travel on some shady country roads and ... moreride by the 8 Point Ranch, home to many exotic animals (Zebra, Antelope, Deer, Buffalo, Elk, etc.).

We'll ride at a moderate (old) "B" pace and re-group at all major turns; the MapMyRide GPS route map is attached for electronic downloading. There is a store stop (at 30 miles) in Elgin.

Start and end at the "Good Luck Grill". It is located at 14605 North FM 973; that is 1.8 miles north of US 290. Go east out of Manor on US 290. Turn left (north) on FM 973 for approx. 1.8 miles, the Good Luck Grill is on the right (east). Please use the parking lot area closest to the road---away from the restaurant.

Helmets are mandatory on all my rides. Please arrive early enough to prepare yourself + bike, have the 5-minute safety briefing and then be ready for an on-time departure.

This is a "B" paced ride. If you are not familiar with our ride categories, please check these two sites to ensure you can match yourself to the ride:

http://www.austincycling.org/self_paced_and_hosted

and

http://www.austincycling.org/hosted_ride_descriptors

All are invited for conversation and lunch afterwards at the "Grill"---they have a very nice fan-cooled veranda (that's "back porch" in plain talk).

Look forward to seeing you !!!!!

Come join our merry band of bikers on our new Sunday Mellow Ride! We may be covering the 62 miles of southwest Austin, better known as the Saturday 100K loop.... more
Or we'll do something else. Depends mostly on wind direction and group whim.

Our average pace will be 18-20mph.
This is NOT a recovery ride! It is harder and 20mi longer than the Saturday MOTR ride. It is the same distance and includes an additional water stop, when compared to the Saturday 100K. It is a challenge meant to prepare riders for the Saturday 100K.

If you would like a pleasant recovery spin, check out the Sunday Violet Crown ride that leaves from Mellow Johnny's at 8:15am
