A moderate C-pace ride (roughly 11 to 14 mph) on The Southern Walnut Creek Trail from Govalle Park to the Abrupt End and return. Round trip is about 20 miles. The trail is paved for ... morethe entire distance, with a 1/2 mile hill on the outbound. We'll regroup periodically on the outbound, and at the Abrupt End. The return is mostly downhill. And you might even see Lance flashing by.
The trail is two-way and narrows down in spots, with a couple of blind corners. Single-file riding and moderate speed on the turns is recommended!

There are two significant road intersections that require caution to cross.

Optional coffee afterwards at Sa-Ten Cafe at 916 Springdale, Suite 110.

A map of Govalle Park's location is at http://austinparks.org/parks/govalle-park/

Bring water, a snack, a spare bicycle tire tube, and tools to fix a flat. Riders will sign a liability waiver at the ride start and must wear a helmet.

There are no restrooms on the trail itself. There are restrooms at Govalle Park and at the Austin Tennis Center, about 1/3 mile off the trail.

Sorry for the late posting-----Let's do this "NEW HIP" ride!! I will be walking 1 low water crossing!! This is a much better weekday route; due to the very heavy weekend traffic on ... moreHamilton Pool Road.

A Pedernales Pedal (counter clockwise) version, from a different/new starting location (see below)!!

Hilly, but a very scenic/pretty route, with only a few turns---very different for me!! We'll ride west past Hamilton Pool, crossing the Pedernales River into Cypriss Mill and on west, before turning south on Texas 281 into Johnson City. We'll go east out of Johnson City on Robinson Road winding our way past the Pedernales Park entrance on our meandering ride back to Ranch Road 12, before turning north back to our starting location----only 7 lines on the Q-sheet!! Just under 3100 ft. of climbing (per RidewithGPS). We'll have a STORE STOP, in Johnson City, at 33 miles.

NOTE I: Please arrive, and be ready to ride 58-60 miles, in time for a 8:50 AM riders meeting so we can roll promptly at 9:00 AM.

NOTE II: Helmets are required on all Bike Austin rides.

NOTE III: I do not have maps of this route, but Q-sheets will be provided. An version is listed below, from RIDEwithGPS, for electronic downloading.

Join us for a 2-day, self-contained biking / camping trip from Mother Neff State Park (north of Ft. Hood) along country roads to Lake Whitney State Park (http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-whitney). ... moreSelf-contained bike touring (https://www.adventurecycling.org/resources/how-to-department/bicycle-travel-basics/) uses a rack and panniers (or trailer) to haul everything you need for the journey on your bike. If we get a volunteer SAG driver (not organized by the club), you may be able to put some of your luggage in the vehicle; otherwise you will be carrying everything you need on your bike. If you have a rear rack but no panniers we may be able to lend you some.

We will ride about 55 miles each day, with a group pace averaging 12 mph. We plan to ride together, but route sheets will be provided for those who wish to ride faster or slower. Bring snacks and lunch food for Saturday. We'll stop for dinner in a cafe about 10 miles from Lake Whitney S.P., pick up food for breakfast, and ride on to the park. After a group breakfast we'll head back on Sunday. We can stop at a grocery to resupply Sunday morning.

Chip in $20 per person to cover camping and Sunday breakfast. Funds collected which exceed expenses will be donated to charity. Additional funds are needed to buy your dinner, as well as snacks and lunch along the route, park admission ($6), and to contribute to the SAG driver's expenses. To RSVP, send an email to trip organizer John Lacy lacy@astro.as.utexas.edu . He will interview each participant to make sure the trip is right for them. Co-sponsored by Austin Sierra Club.

For the Tuesday "Walnuts" ride---I believe William is "under the weather". Not an Arboretum start, but a "little" closer to an in-town ride start? We haven't done this ride in a while!... more

Going to try a new starting location (just 2 miles north, of the old starting point, on Harris Branch Pkwy.) for an "established" Walnuts ride for Bike Austin. (See the new route map attached below.) We'll be riding in northeast Travis County & southeast Williamson County. We'll have some "vintage" chip-seal roads---so air up your tires accordingly. The store stop is the Doc's Country Store at County Line Road & US 290---29 miles. We'll have only 1289 ft. of climbing (per RIDEwithGPS).

Note I: Please make a purchase IF you use the Valero's rest room facilities before/after the ride.

Note II: Helmets are required on all Bike Austin rides.

Note III: I don't have maps, but Q-sheets will be provided. The RIDEwithGPS version is attached below for electronic downloading.

NEW Starting Point: The Valero Gas Station/Convenience Store at the corner of Parmer Lane and Harris Branch Pkwy. See the starting point location map below. PLEASE park at the ends of the Valero building (north & south)---PLEASE DO NOT block the gas pumps or the front doors of the store. And NOTE: We now have permission to park in the store REAR----in the marked unloading zone!!!

Please arrive, with you and your equipment ready to ride 52 miles, in time to sign-in prior to the starters meeting at 8:50 AM; for a prompt roll-out at 9:00 AM.

This is a hosted "B" pace ride. If you are not familiar with our ride categories, please check these two sites to ensure you can match yourself to the ride:

http://www.austincycling.org/self_paced_and_hosted
