Cross the Continental Divide (Blanco River valley to the Guadeloupe valley)
RIDE NAME AND DISTANCE: Ghost of Hillaceous. 50 miles. DATE/TIME: Saturday 18th November; 8:30 am. RIDE LEADER/CONTACT: William Hudson; 210-387-7340; WilliamPedalsOn@gmail.com... more

DESCRIPTION: A truly fine ride from Wimberley that takes us through Fischer (with its 1890s dance hall) towards Canyon Lake. The route crosses the continental divide ... well, sort of .... we do cross from the Blanco River valley to the Guadaloupe valley. The ride is named after the old Wimberley Hillaceous that used to go to Luckenbach. There is a new store stop on FM-306 which does require single file. Be very cautious of any low water crossings given any recent rainfall.

AVERAGE SPEED: 15 - 17 mph. A guide only; actual pace depends on the group and to maintain this average, there will be some significantly faster stretches.

TERRAIN: Moderately hilly

RIDER LEVEL: Experienced, self-confident riders who are comfortable and very safe in a group riding situation which could include pace-line riding, hilly terrain and exposure to significant urban traffic.

RIDE START ADDRESS & url: Meet at the Scudder Primary School in Wimberley, about 0.25 mile south of FM 2325 on Green Acres Road. (Green Acres road is at the first, and only stop-light west of RR 12 on FM 2325). https://goo.gl/maps/bQyqS1zKaSG2

Due to road construction south of Kyle, we'll be checking out the last few miles to the Park, may turn around early; we'll get as far as we can. A Zone 3 (on a scale of 1-5) ride; ... moreall base miles. Hammerheads will be allowed to ride off the front; we won't chase you! Ride starts in town, but gets out into the country. No big hills, no hot spots, no sprints. Store stops in Buda (17 mi), Kyle (40 mi), others as needed. Coffee and conversation afterwards at Mozart's.
Please be sure to arrive a little early for rider's meeting and to meet newcomers. If you arrive at 9:01 you may find an empty parking lot.

In future we may stretch this ride out to San Marcos (75 miles) for those wanting to ramp up their mileage. Watch this space!

Weather permitting, this will be 80% at a mellow pace, 20% very hard in three specific "hot spots". No drop; we'll regroup after stoplights or anywhere the group can get split, and ... moreafter each hot spot; and refuel at the Creedmoor Valero station. C pace home again. Coffee and conversation afterwards at Mozart's.

Because of the in-town stretches, this ride agerages about 15. That's the average speed your computer will show after the ride, with stoplights, turns, hills, etc. But to average 15 you need to ride 15-18 most of the time on the flats, so please come expecting that.

Please be sure to arrive a little early for signup and rider's meeting.

BE SURE TO CHECK THIS SITE AFTER 7:00 ON RIDE DAY IN CASE OF RAIN CANCELLATION.

START LOCATION: meet (and park) at the back of the "uphill" parking lot across Lake Austin Blvd. from the coffee shop. Look for the old boat on your left up the hill; we're near there.

SATURDAY May 27, 2017 - Ride leader Bo Lora It's time to ride Martindale now that the weather is better. This route combines parts of the Mama Jama ride and the ACA F1 Centrury ride ... moreto create a 70+ mile/115 km Grand Fondo ride through the beautiful countryside southeast of San Marcos and southwest of Lockhart.

We will tackle just over 2000ft of the hills which is pretty evenly distributed along the ride. Our first stop will be in Geronimo at mile 25 with a second stop in Fentress at mile 49. We'll travel on some quiet, open, country roads doing a moderate "B" paced (15-17 mph) no-drop ride, with re-grouping as needed at the next turn.

NOTE I: I will NOT have maps of this route or Q-sheets. if you need them, print a Q-sheet or download the map from the RidewithGPS link is provided here for downloading.

NOTE II: Helmets are required on ALL Bike Austin rides.

Come with your equipment ready to ride 70+ miles, in time to get signed-in and participate in the starter's meeting at 7:45 AM, for a prompt roll-out at 8:00 AM.

We will meet at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church across from the Martindale Post Office. I've given the church a heads up and it is ok to park there, they usually asked us to park as south as possible.

Check this posting ride day morning in case of a weather cancellation.

Ride is on.
We will go down the east side of town to McKinney Falls, then come back on the west. Most of the route is on bike lanes and/or quiet streets, but there is some urban riding. There ... moreare several stretches of rolling hills and/or short moderately steep hills. There are no hills very hard in themselves, but the cumulative effect can be grueling for some riders. The average speed will be 13-15 mph, with perhaps a couple of intervals of sustained 18-25 mph. This is a no drop ride and we will regroup at turns and hilltops as necessary. Please arrive 10 minutes early for ride speech and sign in; we leave at 8:00. Ride route may vary somewhat from the linked map depending upon conditions, participants and ride leader mood ;-). Join us for coffee/breakfast at the Flightpath afterwards. Contact Jeff Hufford at jeff_hufford@hotmail or 512-657-9381 with questions. Ride will be cancelled in case of rain or wet streets.

Join us on future Sundays for rides of distances between 26-50.
