Join us for a ride down the east side of town to McKinney Falls and a return on the west side. This variation uses the Montopolis Bridge and Dove Springs Road. It is slightly less ... morehilly. Otherwise it is much like the usual version of our McKinney Falls ride. Most of the route is on bike lanes and/or quiet streets, but there is some urban riding. There are several stretches of rolling hills and/or short moderately steep hills. There are no hills very hard in themselves, but the cumulative effect can be grueling for inexperienced riders or riders who haven't ridden for a while. The average speed will be 13-14 mph, but we will ride faster on straightaways and some riders may break away on the front. This is a no drop ride and we will regroup at turns and hilltops as necessary.

Riders should bring helmets, spare tube, water, and emergency identification. Please leave headphones, loudspeakers, and earbuds at home.

Parking is available on Duval Street north of 51st and on the side streets off Duval. Please don't park in the alley behind the Peddler and Flight Path.

We will leave promptly at 7:30 am. Please arrive at least 10 minutes early for sign in and ride instructions.

Coffee and conversation after the ride at the Flight Path or at Home Slice Pizza.

TERRAIN: Hilly

NOTE the early starting time----we have entered the "beat-the-heat" mode now!!! This also gets us off of FM 1869 as early as possible---hopefully before most of the heavy traffic!! ... moreA new/old country ride from Liberty Hill.

The 65 mile route will be be at a "Social B" paced group, but may also have a faster " A or A-" group going (hammering?) off the front. This is a variation of the popular Milmor's Man ride from Liberty Hill. These routes are modified from an earlier riding route, while maintaining a very scenic ride, to: a) minimize the riding time on FM 1869 & b) do the CR 284 "rollers" early in the ride instead of at the end of the ride.

After riding west on FM 1869 for 1.5 miles, we'll be on some scenic quiet country roads going west through Oatmeal on our way to Burnet or Bertram.
We return east back through Oatmeal making an elongated figure 8. We'll stay north of FM 1869 on the way home doing a slightly flatter ride than the numerous "rollers" south on CR 284 (we ride those rollers on the way out to Oatmeal). The store stop is in Burnet at 37 miles. Total climbing is 2550 ft. according to RIDEwithGPS.

NOTE I: Helmets are required on ALL bike Austin rides.

NOTE II: I don't have maps, but Q-Sheets (for both rides) will be provided and the RIDEwithGPS versions are attached for electronic downloading.

NOTE III: Please arrive with you & your bike ready to ride 65 miles (we only have one (1) store stop at 37 miles) in time for a 6:55 AM ride start meeting so we can be rolling PROMPTLY at 7:00 AM. Bring plenty of drink & food for the ride distance.

NOTE IV: Start Location is the Liberty Hill Elemenmtary School on Loop 332. (No restroom facilities at ride start).

Lunch after the ride, for those interested (all are invited), at the Liberty Hill Corner Market/Deli.

Be sure and check this posting early ride morning for any possible weather cancellation.

Join us for a 2-day, self-contained biking / camping trip from Mother Neff State Park (north of Ft. Hood) along country roads to Lake Whitney State Park (http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-whitney). ... moreSelf-contained bike touring (https://www.adventurecycling.org/resources/how-to-department/bicycle-travel-basics/) uses a rack and panniers (or trailer) to haul everything you need for the journey on your bike. If we get a volunteer SAG driver (not organized by the club), you may be able to put some of your luggage in the vehicle; otherwise you will be carrying everything you need on your bike. If you have a rear rack but no panniers we may be able to lend you some.

We will ride about 55 miles each day, with a group pace averaging 12 mph. We plan to ride together, but route sheets will be provided for those who wish to ride faster or slower. Bring snacks and lunch food for Saturday. We'll stop for dinner in a cafe about 10 miles from Lake Whitney S.P., pick up food for breakfast, and ride on to the park. After a group breakfast we'll head back on Sunday. We can stop at a grocery to resupply Sunday morning.

Chip in $20 per person to cover camping and Sunday breakfast. Funds collected which exceed expenses will be donated to charity. Additional funds are needed to buy your dinner, as well as snacks and lunch along the route, park admission ($6), and to contribute to the SAG driver's expenses. To RSVP, send an email to trip organizer John Lacy lacy@astro.as.utexas.edu . He will interview each participant to make sure the trip is right for them. Co-sponsored by Austin Sierra Club.
