ATTENTION----Delaying this ride for better recovery timing!---Tell you what---We are going to make it a BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION ride for ALL those who do this ride!!! Heck; we will all ... morebe "old geezers" someday!!
OK-OK, it is time for a nice group ride to celebrate the birthday's of several "old geezers" you may have done a little riding with over the last few years! We MAY even have some cake to share with all after the ride! It should be a nice, easy "social" ride; as we don't want to leave any "old geezers" in the dust!!

A quiet, (mostly country roads) ride thru northeast Travis, southeast Williamson, & northwest Bastrop Counties. We'll pedal by Taylor's Murphy Park & Lake, thru "bustling" Thrall, by the historic Lawrence Chapel, by the scenic 8 Point Ranch (home to many exotic animals), by the Dream Time Animal Sanctuary, and finally pedal home by the quiet New Sweden Lutheran Church Cemetery! We'll be on many quiet country roads for this flat (only 1715 ft. of climbing--per RidewithGPS). We'll have STORE STOPS at 25 miles (the Food Market in Thrall) and at 53 miles (Doc's Country Store at County Line Rd. & US 290).

Note the starting location!! We will start from Richland Hall on Cameron Rd., about half way between Stager Lane and Cele Rd., on the west side of the road, next to the Travis County Fire Dept. Training Center. There is an "outhouse" at the starting location, but to be safe, you may want to bring your own TP!! (see the starting location map below) Be sure and park as far SOUTH (away from the Hall) in the parking lot as possible since there may be an "event" at Richland Hall later this morning--Thanks.

NOTE I: Helmuts are required on all Bike Austin rides.

NOTE II: I don't have maps, but Q-sheets will be available and the RidewithGPS version is attached for electronic downloading.

NOTE III: Please arrive with you and your bike ready to ride 70 miles for a 7:50 AM ride start meeting for a PROMPT roll-out at 8:00 AM.

If you are not familiar with our ride catagories; please see the following 2 sights to insure you are matched for this ride:

Enjoy scenic Lockhart, Matindale, and Luling. This route serves a wide range of cycling ability from pure recreation to training for long-distance and/or multi-day events such as the ... moreMS 150, Tour de Cure, and Mamma Jamma rides. Terrain is mainly flat with a few rollers thrown just to make the ride a bit of a challenge. We will end the ride at Smitty's BBQ which, especially in the Winter, can be a blessing all its own! There will be 2 rest stops with a 3rd optional in Luling.

The intersection of Hwy 80 and FM 20 (Fentress) is the point at which to ride either 36 miles or opt for the longer 50 mile distance. Contact phone - Clark Shaffer - 512 897 0070. There will be que sheets and a gps link provided.

For gps download of route please go to www.mapmyride.com and search "Lockhart - Bike Austin Route" Total distance is more than 60 miles, however this map includes both the short and long distance routes. I will be providing queue sheets before departure.

The starting point is the courthouse in the center of town (all the spires observable as you enter Lockart from the north off of 183)

Join us for a ride down the east side of town to McKinney Falls and a return on the west side. Most of the route is on bike lanes and/or quiet streets, but there is some urban riding. ... moreThere are several stretches of rolling hills and/or short moderately steep hills. There are no hills very hard in themselves, but the cumulative effect can be grueling for inexperienced riders or riders who haven't ridden for a while. The average speed will be 13-14 mph, but we will ride faster on straightaways and some riders may break away on the front. This is a no drop ride and we will regroup at turns and hilltops as necessary.

Riders should bring helmets, water, and emergency identification. Please leave headphones and earbuds at home.

Parking is available on Duval Street north of 51st and on the side streets off Duval. Please don't park in the alley behind the Peddler and Flight Path.

We will leave promptly at 8 am. Please arrive at least 10 minutes early for sign in and ride instructions.

Coffee and conversation after the ride at the Flight Path.

DESCRIPTION: A truly fine ride from Wimberley that takes us through Fischer (with its 1890s dance hall) towards Canyon Lake. The route crosses the continental divide ... well, sort of .... we do cross from the Blanco River valley to the Guadaloupe valley. The ride is named after the old Wimberley Hillaceous that used to go to Luckenbach. There is a new store stop on FM-306 which does require single file. Be very cautious of any low water crossings given any recent rainfall.

AVERAGE SPEED: 15 - 17 mph. A guide only; actual pace depends on the group and to maintain this average, there will be some significantly faster stretches.

The ride will start at the Great Hills Starbucks (9722 Great Hills Trail) at 8:00 am sharp. Coffee afterwards for those interested.

Burn off yesterday's turkey and all the other bits!! No drop; regroup after stoplights or anywhere the group can get split, and after each hot spot; and refuel at the Creedmoor Valero ... morestation. C pace home again. Coffee and conversation afterwards at Mozart's.

Because of the in-town stretches, this ride agerages about 15. That's the average speed your computer will show after the ride, with stoplights, turns, hills, etc. But to average 15 you need to ride 15-18 most of the time on the flats, so please come expecting that.

Please be sure to arrive a little early for signup and rider's meeting.

This ride is for those interested in riding the south route towards Kyle and starting in the south. I Will be starting from my house at 4609 Copano Court at 9 am and heading towards ... moreKyle. You can start at my place or meet along the way. Once we get to Mountain City it may be a game time decision to decide if we take the extra five miles to five mile dam or head all the way to San Marcos and back. This should be a fun, but hopefully fast ride. There are some fast parts, but we will continue to gather in spots and make sure everyone makes it back safely.

Please text or call me at 765-532-6423 if you're interested in riding. I don't really check my email often, so would be preferable to call or text.

Thx. Mike

1st scheduled MS 150 training ride. Each month, beginning in January, in preparation for the April 28th event, I will host two consecutive days of riding (Saturday & Sunday). ... more

If you are planning on riding the 2018 MS150 or any of the other mass rides coming up, you should enjoy our Group Riding Skills class/training rides. These will help you become comfortable riding for two days with 13,000 of your closest friends…and the emphasis is on close.

To register for this and/or any subsequent training rides tied to this event please go to:

https://bikeaustin.org/civicrm/?page=CiviCRM&q=civicrm/event/info&reset=1&id=419

The training rides will start with shorter distances (longer routes will be available) and build up to longer distances in each subsequent weekend. This weekend will begin at Lake Pflugerville. The minimum distance will be 24 miles each day, however, there is a loop on the route which can be done any number of subsequent times as well as a longer route out to Hutto and back for those who want to ride a longer distance. I'm flexible and will/can ride with both those who want to do the shorter route as well as those who want to continue on for a longer ride.

Each ride will begin with a 15 - 30-minute discussion of basic riding safety issues and aspects including use of gears and shifting, proper hydration and nutrition while on the ride, and riding techniques within the first 5 to 10 miles of the ride to increase your safety. The ride is designed so that I, and any of the other LCI's assisting, will ride with the group and talk individually (as much as we can) with riders while looking at basic bike fit issues, and discussing basic aspects of bike handling skills when riding in large packs or riders.

As will all Bike Austin rides, riders must come with their own helmet for safety reason. No rider will be allowed to ride without a helmet.

If you have any questions please contact me, Clark Shaffer, at 512 897 0070

The instructor will focus on group communication skills, avoidance maneuvers, and safe and efficient paceline techniques. Minimum attendance is nine (9) students. Fees for instruction is $35 per person per day, $60 per person per weekend or all 8 for $210.

For those of you who are required to attend by your team, you will get a certificate of completion (2 days of attendance required).

Assuming class minimums are met, we will offer this session 4 weekends before the MS150 on the following dates (Choose your package):

Sat 1/20 (25 mi), Su 1/21 (30 mi),
Sat 2/17 (35 mi), Su 2/18 (35 mi),

Each month, beginning in January, in preparation for the April 28th event, I will host two consecutive days of riding (Saturday & Sunday).
